Why Softball Pitchers Should Use Plyo Balls of Different Weights

When it comes to plyo training for softball pitchers, one-size-fits-all doesn’t cut it. Each weight of the OGX Plyo Ball Set is chosen to train something different—from building arm length and awareness to translating patterns into game-day success. Here’s how it works:

The Role of Each Plyo Ball Weight

1lb (16oz) – Glove Arm Awareness
Often overlooked, the glove arm plays a critical role in trunk-arm timing. The 1lb plyo helps pitchers register where their glove arm is in space during movement.

12oz & 8oz – Overload Plyos
These are heavier than a softball and are used at ~75% intensity. Overload helps:

  • Slow the arm down
  • Promote better trunk-arm sequencing
  • Build length and “whip” in the arm
Ideal for pitchers with short or rigid arm paths.

7oz – Neutral Plyo
Equal in weight to a softball, the 7oz is used to bridge the feel from overload to game-like throwing. It reinforces movement patterns without overloading the arm.

5oz – Underload Plyo
Used selectively for advanced pitchers with stable patterns. It adds speed to already efficient mechanics, but can be counterproductive if timing and deceleration aren’t locked in.

Why Mixing Weights Matters

At OGX, we train pitchers to hit the same target with different ball weights. Why? Because adjustability is the foundation of game-ready command. It challenges the pitcher to:

  • Recognize space
  • Adjust arm speed
  • Connect timing to spin, location, and trajectory
